  • China bans Winnie the Pooh film over comparisons to Xi

Stuffed Winnie the Pooh and Eeyore characters are seen at the world premiere of Disney's "Christopher Robin," in Burbank, California, U.S., July 30, 2018. It started when Xi visited the United States in 2013 and an image of him and his former American counterpart Barack Obama walking together spurred comparisons to Winnie, a portly Xi, walking with Tigger, a lanky Obama.

China's foreign film quota allows a maximum of around 34 foreign films to be imported into the country per year.

The A.A. Milne character has become a symbol of political dissent in China after President Xi Jinping was compared to Pooh, according to BBC.

Last summer, government censors blocked all images of Winnie from the site.

It is the second time this year a Disney film has been denied release in China, after A Wrinkle in Time, which deals with issues surrounding magic and religion, was banned.

In March, the Beijing International Film Festival pulled award-winging gay romance "Call Me By Your Name" from its programme, not long after the country's film regulator deemed LGBT content inappropriate, alongside content that includes bestiality.

As a result, Xi has censored Winnie the Pooh on social media in China and now he is targeting the live action film, which stars Ewan McGregor as Christopher Robin.

The government has not completely banned photos of Pooh from the internet, but it has restricted them.
