  • Men who wear boxer shorts have far better sperm, study suggests

A study has found that men in Y-fronts produce less sperm compared with those who choose underwear that gives their testicles room to cool down.

The levels of follicle-stimulating hormone or FSH was found to be higher among men who wore briefs regularly.

"Because of this, we were able to find a potential compensatory mechanism whereby decreased sperm production relating to the type of underwear signals to the hypothalamus to increase secretion of gonadotropin [s], [hormones that act] on the testes and that is reflected by the increased levels of FSH, to try to increase sperm production".

The team of United States researchers examined data on 656 men who were part of couples seeking treatment at a fertility centre in America between 2000 and 2017. Almost half of the men - 345, said that they preferred boxer shorts over bikini briefs for men.

The results showed that men who chose looser-fitting undergarments like boxers had a higher average sperm count and concentration than men who frequently wore briefs.

However, those efforts aren't enough.

The study also doesn't prove that tight underwear and a lower sperm count are tightly connected. Further the levels of their FSH was 14 percent lower.

Men were asked to recall what underwear they prefer rather than actually being observed, and all of the men were seeking fertility treatment - so the findings might be have been different if other men had been involved in the test.

However, researchers noted that none of the sperm counts measured were below the normal range, implying that underwear is not a major factor in pregnancy.

So don't run out and buy a pack of boxers because you're anxious about your sperm counts, Kawwass added.

"The men who may benefit most from paying attention to what type of underwear they're wearing are men who are already having problems with fertility", he said. It was published Wednesday in the journal Human Reproduction. From the semen samples the team of researchers looked at total count of sperm, motility of the sperms, morphology or appearance of the sperm and the extent of DNA damage to the sperm.

But Prof Pacey told the BBC: "Potentially switching from tight to loose might help some men who are on the lower edge of sperm production".
