The mother of Heather Heyer, who died past year when a white nationalist slammed his vehicle into counter-protesters in Charlottesville, has urged people to stay peaceful as Washington DC readies itself for Unite the Right 2.

Trump's tweet on Saturday faced criticism on social media as some jumped on the his wording of "all types of racism", after his claim previous year that "both sides" were responsible for the violence.

Taking, as ever, to Twitter, the 45th President of the United States referred to last year's incidents as "senseless death and division" and urged the entire nation to come together as one.

"Some of our members are concerned about safety for their staff and guests and came to us with questions as we are a resource for the restaurant community".

"I condemn all types of racism and acts of violence", Trump added, before declaring, "Peace to ALL Americans!"

As the anniversary of last year's deadly Charlottesville riots approaches, states of emergency have been declared for the city of Charlottesville, parts of Northern Virginia and the state of Virginia.

A group of anti-fascist and Black Lives Matter demonstrators march in front of the Rotunda on the campus of the University of Virginia.

White House aides also say Trump loves the attack on NFL players kneeling for the national anthem and seeks out reasons and stories to tweet about it. Many participants dressed as if they were headed to battle, shouted racist slurs and clashed violently with counter-protesters. "We don't see no riot here", activists chanted Saturday evening (local time).

Saturday marked the anniversary of a night march by torch-toting white supremacists through the University of Virginia's campus a day ahead of a larger rally in Charlottesville's downtown.

She acknowledges she had never been able to obtain or hear the tapes but said three unnamed sources had described their contents. The White House responded by slamming the book and its author and chastising the press for writing about it.

As reported previous year, following Heyer's death, "about 1,000 people attended a memorial service for Heyer in Charlottesville".

The rally is being billed as a "white civil rights rally" meant to protest "civil rights abuse in Charlottesville".

The organizer of last year's rally, Jason Kessler, had vowed to hold a rally in a park near the White House on August 12 after Charlottesville denied him a permit.

The mother of Heather Heyer, the 32-year-old woman who was hit by a vehicle and killed last year, has also spoken publicly leading up to the anniversary.

"I felt the need to be here and support the businesses", Falzer said as she ate lunch at a diner on Main Street.

In addition, two police officers died in a helicopter crash while they were monitoring the protests.

An independent investigation of last year's rally violence found the chaos stemmed from a passive response by law enforcement and poor preparation and coordination between state and city police.

Throughout the day, only three people were arrested on misdemeanor charges, one for trespassing, one for disorderly conduct and one for possessing a prohibited item, the city said. An extensive review identified "gaps" in planning and communication among agencies, culminating in this year's plan, Charlottesville Police Chief RaShall Brackney said.
