England lead the five-match series 1-0.

Having scored 141 runs in the afternoon session to take the lead past 100, England continued to dominant after tea, with Bairstow reaching his half-century and Woakes following suit shortly after.

Earlier, on the Day 2, English skipper Joe Root opted to bowl after winning the toss and invited India to bat first.

Woakes breezed past his previous Test-best score of 66 and eventually overtook Bairstow.

Chris Woakes' maiden Test century put England in total control on the third day of the second Test against India.

Indeed no batsman had made more than 29 and the overall batting average in the game stood at 14.93 - the lowest for a Test in England since 1958.

James Anderson, England " s all-time leading Test wicket-taker, took full advantage of the swing-friendly conditions with a return of five for 20.

With an exuberance tinged with a little awkwardness he punched the air with his bat, like a man playing an exceptionally wristy forehand in tennis, before raising both hands in the air and celebrating towards a dressing room whose delight in his achievement spoke volumes about his standing in this England side.

Earlier, England's top order again failed with openers Keaton Jennings (11) and Alastair Cook (21) falling in successive overs.

The exit of England's all-time leading Test run-scorer meant 20-year-old debutant batsman Ollie Pope walked out with the hosts in trouble at 32 for two.

Even though Bairstow was the more senior of the pair, it was Woakes who looked the more impressive, driving, cutting and pulling the ball with authority around the Lord's outfield.

Jos Buttler (24) got in and got out before he too fell lbw aiming across the line as Shami took a third wicket this innings. But Kuldeep rarely troubled Bairstow, who cover-drove him for four to complete a 76-ball fifty featuring seven boundaries.

It was not certain that Woakes would play this Test. England decided on the second morning to select him over off-spinner Moeen Ali, with Ben Stokes on trial for affray.

Woakes, whose two for 19 on Friday included the prize scalp of India captain Virat Kohli, followed Bairstow to the landmark in 71 balls with his seventh four.
