Jordanian police cars are seen one day after the security incident at the city of Al Salt, Jordan, August 11, 2018.

Prime Minister Omar Razzaz portrayed Friday's bombing as a "terrorist attack".

The clash that began late on Saturday was among the deadliest between insurgents and Jordanian security forces in recent years.

Jordan plays a prominent role in the USA -led coalition against Islamic State, providing military, logistical and intelligence support, according to Western diplomats and regional intelligence sources.

Security forces had been deployed to protect the town's annual festival, which hosts prominent Arab music acts.

The shoot-out in the city of Salt, northwest of the Jordanian capital, Amman, came after a home-made bomb exploded on Friday under a patrol vehicle at a music festival, killing one security force member and wounding six.

Jordanian authorities did not say Sunday what motivated the Fuheis attackers, and there was no claim of responsibility.

Security forces chasing the suspects zeroed in on a multi-story building in the town of Salt, near Fuheis, and attempted to storm it. A wing of the building collapsed.

Jordan's government spokeswoman Jumana Ghuneimat confirmed on Sunday that the bodies were pulled out of the wreckage of a building in the hillside city of Salt.

Jordan earlier this year said it had foiled an Islamic State plot that included plans for a series of attacks last November on security installations, shopping malls and moderate religious figures, state media reported.

An initial report carried by Petra late Friday had said the blast was caused by the explosion of a tear gas grenade.

Militants from al Qaeda and other radical jihadist groups have long targeted the US -allied kingdom and dozens of militants are now serving long prison terms.

In June 2016, a cross-border auto bombing by Daesh launched from Syria killed seven Jordanian border guards.

Three members of the security forces were killed in the shootout with the gunmen who were holed up in an apartment in a four-storey residential bloc in Salt, she said in a statement.

Jordan is considered to an important security ally, particularly by the United States and Israel which view any signs of unrest there with concern.

At the same time, hopelessness and alienation among some of the kingdom's young people, driven by high youth unemployment, have provided fertile ground for recruitment by militant groups.
