Novak Djokovic eased into the second round of the Rogers Cup in Toronto on Tuesday, as a fit-again Stan Wawrinka registered an encouraging victory and Denis Shapovalov began his bid to match last year's fairy tale performance.

A single break of serve was enough for Tsitsipas to clinch the first set, before Djokovic took advantage of some tight errors at the end of the second to force a decider.

Djokovic beat lucky loser Mirza Basic in straight sets last night after his original opponent Hyeon Chung pulled out just one hour before the match. "Now I'm playing the Rogers Cup, so I haven't really thought of doing anything for my birthday except playing a match". Overall, my game was so-and-so. In the moments when I probably needed to step it up, I did".

Djokovic, coming off his fourth Wimbledon title, beat Canadian wild card Peter Polansky 6-3 6-4 after heavy morning rain in Toronto delayed the ATP Masters 1000 match by about an hour.

Djokovic was expected to face Thiem but the seventh seed was upstaged 6-3 7-6 (8-6) by Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Next up for Nadal is due to be Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka after he came from behind to beat Hungary's Márton Fucsovics 1-6, 7-6, 7-6.

Haase instead faced veteran Mikhail Youzhny, defeating the Russian 7-5, 6-2.

Rain interrupted the first set at 6-5, but the Spaniard immediately broke when play resumed to take the set. Winning 1-6, 7-5, 7-5, it's great for me.

The Frenchman, who had been linked with a possible transfer window move to Barcelona, said he remained hungry for more success.

'I knew I was playing pretty good today, ' a delighted Tsitsipas said.

The Australian said his hip injury was still an issue but we would play doubles with Ivan Dodig later on Tuesday. Every tournament starts from zero.

"I just feel like I'm back at my best but I'm still a work in progress".

He was replaced by the 27-year-old Bosnian who was outclassed early, but troubled the 4-time Canadian champ in the second, breaking him twice late, before falling.

"I've won tournaments both in Montreal and Toronto and had plenty of support along the way. I'm trying to get some confidence from winning matches".

Sharapova next faces another Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia, who is ranked sixth in the world.

Unseeded Kiki Bertens is ranked 18th in the world, so it wasn't much of an upset when she beat ninth-seeded Karolina Pliskova 6-2, 6-2 to advance to a matchup with eighth-seeded Petra Kvitova. In other second-round action Wednesday, second-seed Zverev defeated American Bradley Klahn.

Defending champion Elina Svitolina of Ukraine, seeded fifth, led Mihaela Buzarnescu 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 4-3 when the Romanian retired because of an ankle injury.
