  • Federal Bureau of Investigation fires Strzok over anti-Trump texts

Former Deputy Assistant FBI Director Peter Strzok has been fired after months of criticism by President Trump and Republicans over his anti-Trump text messages.

Goelman said that the deputy director "departed from established precedent by firing" Strzok.

The FBI agent who came under scrutiny for anti-Trump texts he sent from a work phone during the 2016 presidential campaign has now been fired, according to his lawyer.

Mr. Trump has repeatedly blasted Strzok in tweets, pointing to Strzok as a reason to mistrust Mueller's "rigged witch hunt" investigation. "In doing so he reversed the decision of the career Federal Bureau of Investigation official responsible for employee discipline who concluded, through an independent review process, that a 60-day suspension and demotion from supervisory duties was the appropriate punishment".

"This decision should be deeply troubling to all Americans", Goelman said in a statement Monday. "[We] did not have confidence that Strzok's decision to prioritize the Russian Federation investigation over following up on the [Clinton investigation]-related investigative lead discovered on the Weiner laptop was free from bias", the report said.

Police union urges members to boycott Miami Dolphins after anthem protests
In a tweet Thursday, Kaepernick lauded Stills and Wilson, two of the Dolphins who protested Thursday night. The Palm Beach County PBA released a similar statement, asking its members to also request ticket refunds.

Goelman said that his client's firing was politically motivated and that his texts represented political speech protected by the First Amendment.

Trump and his Republican allies - particularly in the House of Representatives - argue Strzok and Page embody what they call the "bias" within the FBI and Justice Department that is really at the heart of the department's Russian Federation investigation, which in Trump's construction is a "witch hunt" out to frame him.

A Justice Department inspector general's report released in June was harshly critical of Strzok, asserting he and Page "cast a cloud" over the FBI's actions.

His texts were criticized by the Justice Department's inspector general in a recent report that examined the FBI's handling of the Clinton email probe.
