Joining Fox was his partner-in-crime Christopher Lloyd, who played Doc Brown, as well as Thomas F Wilson (Biff Tannen) and Lea Thompson (Lorraine Baines/McFly).

The cast took part in a panel discussion at the fan event where they addressed speculation that a fourth film could be on the cards.

Back to The Future stars Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson, and Thomas Wilson held a mini-reunion at the Fan Expo Boston over the weekend and discussed the possibility of often-talked about Back to the Future 4.

The expo was filled with Marty McFly lookalikes, as fans dressed in the "life preserver" jacket that became synonymous with the character - prompting MJF to comment he hated his character's garb.

The actors shared images of the reunion on Instagram, including Thompson, who wrote: "Four old friends get back from the future".

Michael J. Fox noted that Back to the Future co-creator Bob Gale is "the gatekeeper" to the franchise.

The foursome - who starred in all three films in 1985, 1989 and 1990 respectively - last got together in 2015, when the original movie turned 30. 'It's 100 degrees and everyone's wearing these vests'. In fact, Gale and the film's director, Robert Zemeckis, have promised to do everything in their power to block a reboot.

When the movie was shot in the 1980s, Fox had been simultaneously starring in U.S. sitcom Family Ties, and working around the clock to fit both into his schedule. He then added that the success of the film "just happened overnight".
