  • The Canadian economy had a surge of hiring last month but most of the new jobs were part time

That was better than estimates of 17,000 added jobs and an unemployment rate of 5.9 per cent.

Nationwide, employment rose by 54,000 jobs in July, with unemployment rate dropping 0.2 percentage points to 5.8 per cent.

Here at home, Prince Albert's unemployment rate took a steep climb, surging to its highest point in months and reaching 11.2 per cent.

The city saw its unemployment percentage increase from 5.8 per cent in June to 6 per cent in July.

Across the province, the unemployment rate was essentially unchanged, Statistics Canada said, at 5.6 per cent.

The report says the country added 82,000 less desirable, part-time positions last month - and lost 28,000 full-time jobs.

"In the wacky world of Canada's monthly employment numbers, July came up with another head scratcher, with some big headlines but some disappointments in the fine print. there are lots of reasons to question just how good the data really are here", said Avery Shenfeld, chief economist at CIBC Economics. But, it could be an indicator of whether the Bank of Canada will increase interest rates next month.

In contrast, employment fell in most goods-producing sectors, specifically manufacturing, construction and natural resources.

The national statistics agency also reported cooling average hourly wage growth, an aspect closely monitored by the Bank of Canada, sliding to 3.2 per cent year-over-year in July from 3.6 per cent last month and 3.9 per cent in May.

On a year-over-year basis, employment rose by 245,900 jobs, or 1.3 percent.

Employment in the key public administration sector, which includes the federal government, saw big gains between June and July. The report said the main cause of the drop was due to the fact fewer young people were looking for work.
