Social media giant, Facebook has acquired broadcast rights to Spanish soccer league LaLiga for three seasons in the Indian subcontinent.

He said that, with almost 350 million Facebook users on the Indian subcontinent, including 270 million in India, partnering with the free social network platform "is key".

The financial details of the agreement were not disclosed in the statement.

Facebook earlier this month agreed to a deal with United Kingdom broadcaster Eleven Sports to show one La Liga and one Serie A game per week on its platform. But this latest deal is its first direct deal with a major football league, according to Bloomberg. All 380 matches of the 2018-2019 La Liga season, which begins Friday, will be available for free on the social networking site in India, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Maldives, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan.

Facebook has bought the rights to broadcast La Liga on the social media platform for free in India and 7 other Asian countries.

The company has inked an exclusive three season deal with the Spanish football league, starting with the 2018/19 season, which kicks off this month.

The deal puts Facebook in competition with Fox's Star India, a network of over 60 television channels that brings sports, entertainment and news to more than 700 million people in India.

Earlier, the La Liga media rights for the Indian subcontinent was with Sony Pictures Networks India.

La Liga hailed the deal as a "one of a kind" agreement, with matches shown "free to air", giving it a wider reach in the Indian subcontinent. Facebook has screened Major League Baseball matches in the United States, and recently reached a deal to show some La Liga and Italian Serie A football matches in the UK.

Facebook told Reuters that while it is considering further sports deals, it does not now plan to become a major content-holder worldwide. Last year, Facebook bid US$600 million to stream Indian cricket but lost to Rupert Murdoch's 21st Century Fox Inc.
