Rhythm and blues singer Aretha Franklin performs at the inaugural gala for President Clinton in Washington on January 19, 1993. She begins her solo with "The moment I wake up/Before I put on my makeup/I say a little" before backup singers chime in with "prayer for you". "In her voice, we could feel our history, all of it and in every share - our power and our pain, our darkness and our light, our quest for redemption and our hard-won respect". "As we grieve, we ask that you respect our privacy during this hard time", the statement concluded. Stevie Wonder visited Franklin in her home this week while she was in hospice care.

"A national treasure to everyone".

The 18-time Grammy award victor inspired multiple singers during her five-decade career from pop diva Mariah Carey and the late Whitney Houston, to Alicia Keys, Beyonce, Mary J Blige and the late Amy Winehouse. "She was elegant, graceful, and utterly uncompromising in her artistry", the former first couple said. Earlier this year, she canceled a pair of performances, including at the New Orleans Jazz Fest, on doctor's orders, according to Rolling Stone. The Queen of Soul remained a prominent face - and voice - for African American civil rights throughout her life.
