  • The department store chain said that its website would be back online as soon as possible

Customers visiting www.houseoffraser.co.uk are presented with a maintenance page stating the retailer is "currently working hard to make some improvements to the website" and are directed to its various social media channels.

The department store chain apologised after it scrapped all orders that had not already been sent to customers.

Sports Direct is adamant however that it will not honour debts owed to supplier from before last Friday, when it assumed ownership of the business.

Outlining the company's decline, EY said House of Fraser took several steps to try to address the issues, securing a £50 million injection of capital in March.

Sports Direct paid £90mln in cash to acquire "all of the United Kingdom stores of House of Fraser, the House of Fraser brand and all of the stock in the business" from accountancy firm E&Y acting as administrators.

Sports Direct has cancelled all of House of Fraser's online orders after a dispute with its new department store arm's warehouse operator, while some fashion suppliers have removed stock as payment wrangles continue.

In a tweet on Thursday, House of Fraser revealed that it would refund thousands of online customers potentially millions of pounds, after cancelling orders after a wave of complaints from shoppers who had not received goods bought.

"They are owed a great deal of money and are threatening to leave stores unless he pays a significant portion of it over the next few days". According to the BBC, warehouse operator XPO Logistics is owed GBP30m (US$38.2m) and stopped processing orders last week because of the dispute.

The broadcaster quotes one Twitter user who wrote: "Absolutely disgraceful". Yes a week ago for my daughters birthday.

Sports Direct chief executive Ashley said at the time: "We will do our best to keep as many stores open as possible".
