The US Geological Survey measured Sunday's quake, which was centred in the northeast of the island, at magnitude 6.3 and a depth of seven kilometres.

The PTWC says that based on all available data, a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaiʻi.

No injuries or damage were immediately reported.

A spokesperson for GNS science said the quake was 580km below the Earth which would have dampened the shaking at the surface.
