Hurricane Florence deluges Carolinas ahead of landfall

Hurricane Florence was downgraded to a Category 1 storm late Thursday night, as it approached shore - but officials warned it was still very risky. Florence is expected to arrive in southeast North Carolina on Friday morning before drifting south into SC.

Unrelated to Florence, Conowingo Dam owner Exelon Corp. opened more than a dozen of the structure's floodgates Wednesday night and into Thursday.

"The worst of the storm is not yet here but these are early warnings of the days to come", he said. "I am frightened about what's coming".

Folks in Charleston, South Carolina, who have chosen not to evacuate, are preparing for a nasty storm that could make landfall right in their backyard.

Life-threatening storm surges of up to 13 feet (4m) have been forecast in some areas when the monster storm eventually makes landfall in North and SC.

He said all the calls for reservations were coming from either SC and North Carolina where the damage is supposed to be the worst. In addition to the high surf, officials are planning for potential life-threatening rip currents and significant beach erosion.
