Hurricane Florence deluges Carolinas ahead of landfall

Hurricane Florence was downgraded to a Category 1 storm late Thursday night, as it approached shore - but officials warned it was still very risky. Florence is expected to arrive in southeast North Carolina on Friday morning before drifting south into SC.

Unrelated to Florence, Conowingo Dam owner Exelon Corp. opened more than a dozen of the structure's floodgates Wednesday night and into Thursday.

"The worst of the storm is not yet here but these are early warnings of the days to come", he said. "I am frightened about what's coming".

"We live in a mobile home so we were just like 'No way, '" she said.

Folks in Charleston, South Carolina, who have chosen not to evacuate, are preparing for a nasty storm that could make landfall right in their backyard.

Some 11,000 power outages have been reported in North Carolina.

Utility companies said millions were expected to lose power and restoration could take weeks.

Florence had once been a Category 4 storm, but even as a Category 1, it could still packs winds of 90 miles per hour, the National Hurricane Center said. However, as the storm continues to track south, rainfall totals could increase.

Life-threatening storm surges of up to 13 feet (4m) have been forecast in some areas when the monster storm eventually makes landfall in North and SC.

But the Chinese government strongly denied the figures, saying there was no mass imprisonment or "arbitrary detention".

He said all the calls for reservations were coming from either SC and North Carolina where the damage is supposed to be the worst. In addition to the high surf, officials are planning for potential life-threatening rip currents and significant beach erosion.

Officials said some 1.7 million people in the Carolinas and Virginia were warned to evacuate, but it's unclear how many did.

Near the beach in Wilmington, a Waffle House restaurant, part of a chain with a reputation for staying open during disasters, had no plan to close even if power was lost. It had long lines on Thursday.

In Sea Breeze, Roslyn Fleming, 56, made a video of the inlet where her granddaughter was baptised because "I just don't think a lot of this is going to be here" after the storm, she told Reuters news agency.

"This storm will bring destruction", North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper said.

Instead, they drove 240km inland to his mother's house in Durham.

"For everyone thinking they can ride this storm out, I have news for you: that will be one of the biggest mistakes you can make in your life".
