The storm was a unsafe Category 4 hurricane Wednesday but was downgraded Thursday night to a Category 1 storm.

Wilmington should be ready for a prolonged and devastating impact as Hurricane Florence roars over Southeastern North Carolina on Friday.

The Hurricane Center's Dennis Feltgen reiterated that warning, saying 90 percent of hurricane-related deaths are from problems that arise with the massive amounts of water. Forecasters said the onslaught could last for days, leaving a wide area under water from both heavy downpours and rising seas.

Folks in Charleston, South Carolina, who have chosen not to evacuate, are preparing for a nasty storm that could make landfall right in their backyard.

On top of the potentially destructive hurricane, forecasters also put parts of North Carolina on tornado watch.

One forecaster says the harm done by a 90 miles per hour wind would be comparable to that suffered from a 110 miles per hour wind.

Over 1,400 flights have been cancelled, according to FlightAware.com, as most of the coastal region's airports are closed to ride out the storm.

Susan Faulkenberry Panousis has stayed in her Bald Head Island, North Carolina home during prior hurricanes, but not this time.

The surge in power outages along the coast was the result of gusts coming off Hurricane Florence and blowing trees into power lines, said Lisa Crawley, a spokeswoman for the co-ops.

CNN's not the only media outlet with reporters in the way of Florence, delivering scoops on what rain and wind look like. Its surge could cover all but a sliver of the Carolina coast under as much as 11 feet (3.4 meters) of ocean water, and days of downpours could unload more than 3 feet (0.9 meters) of rain, touching off severe flooding.

The Charleston area will see winds near tropical storm strength of 40 miles per hour and somewhere between 3 to 6 inches of rain.

The impact is expected to be similar to that of Hurricane Harvey on the Houston area past year, Feltgen said. The town is less than 5 feet above sea level and officials worry that as many as 1,000 of the town's 6,300 residents are planning to stay.

FEMA has warned that while downgraded, the storm will still generate life threatening storm surge and rainfall in North and SC. CoBank, an agricultural lender, estimates damage to North Carolina farming could hit $US1 billion ($1.3b) before the storm slows.

As the last-minute evacuations and preparations of those who refuse to leave wound down, an eerie calm has settled over typically bustling Carolina cities. "You go the other direction east toward Atlantic Beach - it's all dark".

The county had been conducting water rescues since Thursday, Parker said. Do not try to walk or drive your auto through them. "So far, the power is on - Waffle House is open".

In Myrtle Beach, ABC correspondent Pete Combs painted a starker picture of those who chose to stay in place.

An officer inspecting the Triangle Motor Inn found a "basketball-sized hole" in a corner room and firefighters said the building had suffered life-threatening structural damage.
