Viganò's accusations came on the heels of a Pennsylvania grand jury report which detailed over 1,000 instances of sexual abuse by 300 priests and cover-ups by bishops.

The attorneys general of Illinois, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey and New Mexico are investigating sex abuse by Catholic priests in their states.

The Catholic church worldwide is reeling from crises involving sexual abuse of minors, deeply damaging confidence in the church in the United States, Chile, Australia and Ireland where the scandal has hit hardest, and elsewhere. The Vatican has since said he will make a "clarifying" statement.

"We look forward to actively continuing our discernment together, identifying the most effective next steps", the statement said.

"In these times, it seems like the "Great Accuser" [a reference to Satan] has been unchained and is attacking bishops", Pope Francis said.

Cardinal Donald Wuerl, archbishop of Washington, will seek Pope Francis' acceptance of his resignation at the Vatican soon as footage of the District of Columbia prelate being heckled by a parishioner emerged on CNN.

Pope Francis will meet leaders of the US Catholic Church at the Vatican today, after a high profile accusation that the pontiff covered up sexual abuse allegations against an American cardinal.

After launching a "season of healing" in the archdiocese on 14 September, the cardinal explained to his priests that "in the very near future" he plans "to meet with our Holy Father about the resignation I presented almost three years ago, November 12, 2015".

Referring to the McCarrick case, DiNardo called for a "prompt and thorough examination. into how the grave moral failings of a brother bishop could have been tolerated for so long and proven no impediment to his advancement". But now DiNardo himself is accused of allowing a predator priest to remain in his own archdiocese in Texas.

A diocesan statement also referred to allegations the priest, Manuel La Rosa-Lopez, abused a 16-year-old girl in 2001.

But a man testifying four years ago in the Philadelphia trial of Monsignor William Lynn, the first senior U.S. Catholic Church official convicted of concealing sex abuse, accused Bransfield of misconduct. Two dioceses also had announced allegations of inappropriate contact between Archbishop McCarrick and seminarians, resulting in settlements totaling more than $100,000.

The Archbishop of Washington has said he will travel to Rome to ask the Pope to consider accepting his resignation.

"The Holy Father Francis, after hearing the Council of Cardinals, has made a decision to convene a meeting with the presidents of the Episcopal Conferences of the Catholic Church on the theme of the 'protection of minors, '" announced the press office.
