  • The Cleveland Browns trade Josh Gordon to the New England Patriots

The New England Patriots have acquired Josh Gordon in a trade with the Cleveland Browns for a fifth round pick.

It remains unclear exactly why the Browns made a decision to get rid of Gordon now, but NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the "release was not a result of a substance-abuse violation or failing a test". Garoppolo's wide receiver group has no clear go-to players for him to rely on either. We'll see how it pans out, assuming it does happen. It's possible that Gordon's hamstring will be healed sufficiently to allow him to be available for this coming Sunday night's game at Detroit.

There is no doubting Gordon's talent and ability.

Gordon missed the Browns' game Sunday against the New Orleans Saints with a mysterious hamstring injury.

However, after that Pro Bowl season, Gordon was suspended for 44 consecutive games dating back to the final week of the 2014 season, which was a team ban for reportedly missing a walk-through prior to a trip to Baltimore to play the Ravens. The receiver has missed a total of 54 games over the past four seasons (2014-17) due to multiple National Football League suspensions.

Cleveland Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon stretches to make a catch during Wednesday's practice for this weekend's regular-season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers at FirstEnergy Stadium in Cleveland. Gordon earned Pro Bowl honors in 2013 and was named first-team All-Pro after finishing with 87 receptions and an NFL-leading 1,646 yards with nine touchdowns. He appeared in one game this season and recorded one catch for a 17-yard touchdown.

The Browns drafted Gordon in the second round of the 2012 supplemental draft.
