Nomination of Trump's Supreme Court pick Kavanaugh thrown into crisis

She said of the alleged Kavanaugh assault back in their 1980s high school days, "I thought he might inadvertently kill me".

President Donald Trump has defended his nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the US Supreme Court and says it is OK with him if there is a delay on his confirmation while sexual assault allegations are heard.

"Obviously, if Judge Kavanaugh has lied about what happened that would be disqualifying", Collins said, but she added that she had spoken to Kavanaugh on the phone Friday and he had emphatically denied the allegations.

Republican Sen. John Kennedy of Louisiana told reporters the public session would be a "full opportunity" for both to be heard. Katz said, "I would say no one in their right mind regardless of their motive would want to inject themselves into this process and face the kind of annihilation that she will be subjected to by those who want this nominee to go through".

NARAL Pro-Choice America, another major organization on the left fighting against Kavanaugh's nomination, released two new online ads Monday targeting Heller and Maine Sen. "I mean, she's shown some very incredible courage even coming in here and we're dealing with a nominee whose veracity is already an issue".

Ford said the schoolmate jumped on top of them, which somehow allowed her to escape. Early Monday afternoon, the Maine Republican tweeted, "Professor Ford and Judge Kavanaugh should both testify under oath before the Judiciary Committee".

President Trump on Monday (Tuesday NZT) told reporters that "if it takes a little delay, it'll take a little delay" to vet the allegations against Kavanaugh, who is now a judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.

And Kavanaugh has flatly denied the allegation.

He added: "I have never done anything like what the accuser describes, to her or to anyone".

White House counselor Kellyanne Conway said of Ford Monday: "She should not be insulted".

After Kavanaugh was nominated to the Supreme Court, Ford wrote to her congresswoman, Anna G. Eshoo, which was then forwarded to Senator Dianne Feinstein.

The allegation now threatens to inject a potentially heated "he said-she said" battle into the looming midterm congressional elections, with Republican control of the House of Representatives and the Senate at stake.

"I did not do this back in high school or at any time", he said in a statement provided by the White House.

Collins on Monday called for both Kavanaugh and Dr. Ford to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee under oath.

"Unfortunately, committee Democrats have refused to join us in this effort".

Democrats sought to put pressure on Republicans to delay the process.

Mr Kavanaugh made the remark after the accused, Christine Blasey Ford, said via her attorney that she was ready to testify in public.

Ford, now a 51-year-old research psychologist in California, told the Washington Post that in July she sent a letter to Democratic Representative Anna Eshoo about the incident but requested confidentiality at the time. Specifically, at Kavanaugh's Supreme Court confirmation hearing, Senator Patrick Leahy, (D-Vermont) asked Kavanaugh about information he received that had been taken from files stolen by Manuel Miranda from Democrats including Leahy himself. "He was trying to attack me and remove my clothing".

The alleged incident happened the summer before Ford's junior year at a small party, Ford's lawyer, Lisa Banks, said in an interview with Morning Edition's Rachel Martin.
