  • Police cordon off roads in Salisbury after ‘medical incident’

Wiltshire Police described the emergency steps taken in response to "a medical incident" in Salisbury as precautions.

British police said there is no evidence that the nerve agent Novichok was involved in the case of two people who became ill in a Salisbury restaurant, but the premises remain closed off.

Police said: "Police received a call from the ambulance service to Prezzo restaurant, in High Street, at approximately 6.45pm".

The Novichok poisonings have left authorities extremely skittish because there are no firm assurances that the nerve agent has been found and removed.

The "medical incident" was reported in the same city where former Russian agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia were poisoned in March.

Britain accuses Russian Federation for that attack, a charge which Moscow has denied.

Police later stood down the major incident at around 12:30am after confirming "there is nothing to suggest Novichok is the substance", diffusing fears of another nerve agent attack.

They were released after weeks in hospital.

The Italian restaurant is a short walk from Queen Elizabeth Gardens, which was until recently closed off after 44-year-old Dawn Sturgess was fatally poisoned by the nerve agent in June.

Two Russians resembling the men said on television on Thursday that they were innocent tourists who had flown to London for fun and visited the city of Salisbury to see its cathedral.

"You are just absolutely gobsmacked", she said.

Officers added that "recent events in the city and concerns that the pair had been exposed to an unknown substance" had prompted a "highly precautionary approach".

Roads were cordoned off around the Italian restaurant as police tried to determine what caused the pair to fall ill. It is crucial that this is done methodically.

Witness Amanda Worne said on Twitter: "Feeling a little apprehensive as Salisbury leaps to action again when 2 Russians are taken ill in Prezzos showing the same symptoms as before".

A statement from police following the incident said it was not clear if a crime had been committed and enquiries remained ongoing.
