In a highly unusual move, the White House announced on Monday afternoon that the president had directed the justice department and Dan Coats, the director of national intelligence, to publish material that was being kept secret.

According to the statement, Trump declassified 21 pages of the 101-page June 2017 application to obtain a warrant under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, or FISA, to monitor the communications of former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page in 2016.

The move comes as Trump continues his efforts to undermine special counsel Robert Mueller's probe.

The documents will also include texts between several current and former bureaucrats, including Federal Bureau of Investigation officials Peter Strzok, James Comey, Andrew McCabe, Lisa Page and Bruce Ohr.

The documents in question are specific pages of the June 2017 FISA warrant application related to onetime Trump campaign foreign policy adviser Carter Page, all FBI interview reports prepared in connection with all FISA warrant applications in connection with Page and all FBI reports of interviews with Justice Department lawyer Bruce Ohr prepared in connection with the FBI's Russian Federation investigation.

"President Trump, in a clear abuse of power, has made a decision to intervene in a pending law enforcement investigation by ordering the selective release of materials he believes are helpful to his defense team and thinks will advance a false narrative", Rep.

It is not yet known when the government will release the documents. They believe that the FISA court incorrectly allowed the surveillance on the basis of the material in the dossier.

Trump also ordered the Justice Department to release text messages from a number of the key players in the Russian Federation investigation "without redaction" - including former FBI Director James Comey, former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, Ohr, Strzok and Lisa Page.

The declassification of the documents was quickly praised by Trump allies in Congress and attacked by Democrats.

"This has been a long time in coming", Jesse Watters said, adding that people have been asking for the release of these documents for a year or more.
