Malaysia's anti-graft agency said former Prime Minister Najib Razak was arrested on Wednesday and will face further charges of abuse of power over the multimillion-dollar looting of a state investment fund.

Najib would face "several charges" under a section of the MACC Act which deals with using one's office or position for gratification, the agency said.

About 20 reporters waiting at the compound of the MACC building failed to catch Najib entering the premises.

Najib's arrest on Wednesday, however, is seen as more significant as it relates to a central allegation in the long-running scandal - that huge sums from 1MDB went into his bank accounts before the 2013 election.

The U.S. Department of Justice, which is seeking to recover items allegedly bought with stolen 1MDB cash in America, estimates that $4.5 billion in total was looted from the fund.

Najib had reportedly arrived at the MACC headquarters at about 3pm after the MACC requested his presence to have a statement recorded in relation to the case.

Najib had previously been charged with multiple counts of criminal breach of trust, corruption and money laundering over the scandal at the 1MDB state fund.

"This is to aid police investigations under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001", the MACC added.

He pleaded not guilty and was granted bail.

Since losing power, Najib has already been arrested and hit with seven charges related to claims he pocketed some $10 million from a former unit of 1MDB.
