Joshua retains world heavyweight titles with Povetkin stoppage

  • Alexander Povetkin- Alexander Povetkin I did not want to turn professional after winning gold at Athens

The 39-year-old Povetkin, like Joshua an Olympic gold medallist, had previously lost only to Klitschko and over the distance when the great Ukrainian was at his peak.

According to Fury's trainer, Ben Davison, he's ruled out the possibility of Joshua-Wilder taking place in April.

"There is a lot of pressure, the whole country is rooting for me", said Joshua, who enjoys a wide popularity, having drawn nearly 400,000 spectators to his last five fights combined.

Povetkin got up but was sensibly stopped as Joshua pummeled him with punches in front of a crowd of close to 80,0000 at Wembley Stadium.

Immediately afterwards, former heavyweight world champion Fury, who is fighting Wilder on December 1, took to social media to call out Joshua.

"I heard it went very well..."

On Friday, Wilder confirmed via social media he had signed a contract to fight Fury, though a venue for the bout is yet to be confirmed. "April 13 [the date of his next fight] is what I am interested in".

Not only has the heavyweight division been long defined by how much one punch can change fortunes at any given time, both Joshua and Wilder in particular have been forced to rally to keep their unbeaten runs alive. Though Povetkin beat the count and was briefly able to continue, Joshua quickly pushed ahead with a barrage of shots that led to referee Steve Gray stopping the fight as Povetkin sailed to the canvas a second time.

Fury will face Deontay Wilder later this year.

Unlike NASA's Curiosity Rover on Mars, which has six wheels, the 1kg autonomous Ryugu rovers move about by hopping. As it neared touchdown, JAXA tweeted that the control room was silent save for the sound of "deep breaths".

Warren insisted former champion Fury would demand a 50-50 split of the purse for a fight with Joshua.

BBC Sport boxing correspondent Mike Costello: "13 April back at Wembley is an absolute definite".

And in response to Fury, Joshua has told his rival to focus on Wilder.

"They mentioned if it's not Wilder, it's Whyte". We still don't know who's going to be in the opposite corner.

Joshua, 28, played maestro once again on Saturday as almost 85,000 filled Wembley Stadium to see him enter the arena to flames and dance on a riser that elevated him like a god before he rallied to finish mandatory opponent Alexander Povetkin in spectacular fashion in Round 7.

"We're not willing to wait until December", Hearn said. "Ask yourself why don't they want this?" It will be either the winner of the all-British clash between Dillian Whyte and Dereck Chisora or the Wilder-Fury victor.

Steady improvements by Whyte over the last four years, including a win over ex-world title holder Joseph Parker, hasn't heightened the public's desire to see a second fight with Joshua.

"Joshua against either of those two is as good as it can get".
