  • The rock used as a doorstop was determined to be a 22-pound meteorite

For years, a priceless meteorite has been a doorstop at a barn on the west side of MI, but now, the man who held onto it for 30 years has chose to show it off.

Central Michigan University says the 22-pound rock is a meteorite.

"For 18 years, the answer has been categorically 'no, '" she said.

Owner David Mazurek said the meteorite came with a barn he bought in 1988 in Edmore.

The 22lb (10kg) meteorite was the biggest the geologist had been asked to examine in her career. The space rock continued to perform that job for decades, only recently being identified as something very unique and valuable. Weighing 22 pounds, it's the sixth-largest recorded find in MI - and potentially worth $100,000, according to CMU.

"It's the most valuable specimen I have ever held in my life, monetarily and scientifically", CMU geology professor Mona Sibescu told CNN.

Siberscu still wanted a second opinion and sent off a slice of the rock to the Smithsonian Institution. He says the farmer who sold him the property told a tale about his father seeing it fall from the sky and then digging it out of a hole in the 1930s. The farmer claimed the rock had fallen in the 1930s and that the new owner could have it since it was "part of the property".

He also countered West's claim that he was bullied backstage over wearing the MAGA hat: "He wore [the MAGA hat] all week . He joked about how the drugs that are used for mental health issues could be embraced in order to avoid such a situation.

The man even let his kids take the rock to school for show-and-tell throughout the years.

Opportunity came knocking this year when he learned about MI residents finding and selling pieces of meteorites.

The owner promised to give 10 percent of the sale value to CMU.

"Just think, what I was holding is a piece of the early solar system that literally fell into our hands", Sirbescu said of the meteorite. The Smithsonian is considering purchasing the meteorite.

"When I showed her, she grabbed the bag, said it was heavy and took it out and said, 'It's a meteorite, '" Mazurek said.

The Smithsonian and a mineral museum in ME are considering buying the meteorite - now called "Edmore" - for display, according to CMU.
