  • Voyager 2 May Be Leaving the Solar System Soon NASA Says

Voyager 2 has been traveling through the outermost layer of the heliosphere since 2007 and is expected to enter interstellar space in the next few months. In may 2012, the same changes of parameters of cosmic rays discovered "Voyager 1", it happened about three months before the device came out in interstellar space, says that "Voyager 2" is close to the interstellar medium. Additionally, the Voyager 2's Low-Energy Charged Particle also read a boost in high-energy cosmic rays.

Although Voyager 2 was launched two weeks before Voyager 1 all the way back in 1977, the latter probe was on a shorter trajectory, and therefore reached Jupiter and Saturn first.

However, Voyager team members note that the increase in cosmic rays is not a definitive sign that the probe is about to cross the heliopause. NASA scientists aren't sure when Voyager 2 will join its twin by crossing the heliosphere boundary, an area known as the heliopause.

Considering that Voyager 2 was not released at the same time as its predecessor or the same path, scientists can not predict when it will pass through the heliopause.

To help you familiarise with the subject, a heliopause is a bubble formes by the solar wind around out solar system. Some of these fast-moving particles are blocked by the heliosphere, so Voyager 2 will soon measure more cosmic rays as it enters the heliopause.

American space agency NASA's probe, on a way to interstellar space, detected an increase in cosmic rays that originated outside the solar system, according to NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab.

The probe is now just under 11 billion miles (about 17.7 billion kilometers) from Earth.

"We're seeing a change in the environment around Voyager 2, there's no doubt about that", Voyager Project Scientist Ed Stone, a physicist at Caltech, said in the statement.

Lasting longer than ever expected, Voyager 2 continued through the solar system to Uranus and Neptune. The only thing I can say with certainty: "we're not quite there yet". Over the course of the 11 year cycle of the sun, the solar wind flows and ebbs making the bubble around our solar system contract and expand. The information they have returned to Earth has revolutionized the science of planetary astronomy, helping to resolve key questions while raising intriguing new ones about the origin and evolution of the planets in the solar system.
