30-year-old doorstop turns out to be a rare meteorite

  • A Michigan man recently learned that a rock he's been using as a doorstop is a meteorite worth $100,000

The estimated $US100,000 ($141,700) price tag puts the MI man's 10kg rock at $US10 ($14) per gram. That's what happened to a MI man.

"Meteor-wrong" is the somewhat humorous word used to describe rocks that were wrongfully believed to be meteorites but turns out to be simple rocks.

A man in MI will soon be richer by thousands of dollars - thanks to a meteorite he had been using as a doorstop for 30 years.

After Central Michigan University Geology Professor Mona Sirbescu determined the doorstop was no ordinary rock, she reportedly sent two pieces over to the Smithsonian. It was not until recently that he made a decision to examine his rock.

According to the statement, when the man bought a farm in Edmore, Michigan in 1988, he was shown around the property by the old owner, when he saw a large odd rock holding open a shed door. But the best test for a suspected meteorite is still a laboratory test to confirm its components, particularly its nickel component because while nickel is rather rare on Earth, it is nearly always present in meteorites. "It's the most valuable specimen I have ever held in my life, monetarily and scientifically". According to the owner, the lump he got together with a farm and to check its authenticity, he decided, after reading stories as profitable to sell the meteorites. Weighing 22 pounds, it's potentially worth $100,000, as per the university. BBC reports that the renowned Smithsonian Institution is interested in acquiring it.

The farmer told the man that as it was part of the property, he could have it.

Sirbescu further added that "What typically happens with these at this point is that meteorites can either be sold and shown in a museum or sold to collectors and sellers looking to make a profit".

There's now a bit of a scuffle over who will buy the meteorite - both the Smithsonian and a mineral museum in ME are considering purchasing the incredible find. If a sale goes through, the man has agreed to give 10% of the sale value to the university for the study of earth and atmospheric sciences.
