It's the first job he's taken since he parted ways with Disney, which let him go from the lucrative Guardians of the Galaxy franchise in July in the wake of old controversial tweets that had been compiled by alt-right journalists and sent to Disney.

Filmmaker Gavin O'Connor had been tapped to direct Suicide Squad 2, but according to Variety's Justin Kroll, pitched a script similar to the upcoming Birds of Prey movie, which got greenlit before Suicide Squad 2 could.

James Gunn issued a statement (via Hollywood Reporter) at the time, saying: 'My words of almost a decade ago were, at the time, totally failed and unfortunate efforts to be provocative. Regardless of how much time has passed, I understand and accept the business decisions taken today. To everyone inside my industry and beyond, I again offer my deepest apologies. Gunn produced the project with The H Collective.

When he tweeted his willingness to join Suicide Squad 2, fans immediately gave suggestions of who he could play including an iteration of Bane (originally played by Tom Hardy in The Dark Knight Rises) as well as Solomon Grundy, a zombified supervillain/anti-hero in the DC comics. It suggests that Gunn has "a totally new approach" to Suicide Squad in mind, which would hint at-but not outright confirm-something other than a sequel to the 2016 dud directed by David Ayer.

Ayer was originally set to direct Gotham City Sirens, which seems to have gone by the wayside, and to chip in on Suicide Squad 2, which was greenlit nearly immediately after the first movie overperformed box office expectations despite poor reviews.
