Michael could be a Category 3 storm when it makes landfall, which is expected on Wednesday, becoming the most powerful storm to strike the panhandle in at least a decade. "As Hurricane Michael nears landfall, we are working with state and local officials in Florida to take all necessary precautions", Trump said Monday.

His Democratic opponent in Florida's Senate race, Sen. Florida Panhandle and Big Bend, southeast Alabama, and portions of southwest and central Georgia...4 to 8 inches, with isolated maximum amounts of 12 inches. Rick Scott posted a series of tweets warning residents to prepare and evacuate.

Mandatory evacuations have been ordered in several Florida counties and devastating effects are expected to expand far inland. It strengthened to a Category 3 storm late Tuesday afternoon.

Michael threatens to become the most the most intense hurricane to hit the Florida panhandle since 1851, according to Philip Klotzbach, a meteorologist at Colorado State University. The fate of about 280 residents who authorities said defied evacuation orders was unknown. Weakening is expected after the storm makes landfall.

Heavy rains are forecast for the Carolinas, which were drenched by Hurricane Florence last month.

"I know people are tired from Florence, but don't let this storm catch you with your guard down", North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper said, adding, "A number of homes have rooftop tarps that could be damaged or blown away with this wind".

Scott also warned caregivers at north Florida hospitals and nursing homes to do all possible to assure the safety of the elderly and infirm.

Citing data from aircraft that flew in the storm, the hurricane center says Michael is becoming better organized and symmetrical as it moves north.

Hurricane Michael Weakens to Category 1 Storm
Michael's minimum central pressure - a key measure of hurricane strength - was measured at 919 millibars when it made landfall . A total of 453 flights had been cancelled on Wednesday across the country, with many occurring in the Florida area.

Hurricane Michael, the fiercest storm to hit Florida in more than 80 years and the third-most powerful ever to strike the US mainland, battered the state's Gulf coast on Wednesday with roof-shredding winds, towering surf and torrential rains.

Anxious meteorologists said it had the potential of becoming one of the worst storms in the history of Florida's Panhandle. "We haven t seen as robust of an evacuation response from the civilian population that we have seen in other storms".

"It really started as a tropical storm, and then it went to Category 1, then it was Category 2 and before you know it, it was Category 4", O Shaughnessy said.

"No one's going to survive" such a wall of water, he said. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 45 miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 175 miles.

The neighbouring states of Alabama and Georgia have also declared a state of emergency. We will continue to monitor Hurricane Michael's path and GEMA/HS is leading our preparedness efforts.

The Miami-based centre forecast as much as 1 foot of rain in parts of Florida, Georgia and SC.

Even before landfall, the hurricane disrupted energy operations in the Gulf, cutting crude oil production by more than 40 percent and natural gas output by almost a third as offshore platforms were evacuated ahead of the storm's arrival. USA producers in the Gulf cut oil production by about 40 percent and natural gas output by 28 percent on Tuesday, the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement said.
