Emergency services in the Balearic archipelago tweeted that a man and a woman were found near Arta, one of the affected towns, "close to the area" where the vehicle of a missing German couple had been found.

Some of the victims were found still in their cars that had been carried away by the flood waters.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: "We are supporting the family of two British people following their deaths in Spain, and will do all we can to assist them at this deeply hard time".

Two of the victims were British, a senior official from the San Llorenc mayor's office, Antonia Bauza, told radio station Cadena Ser.

Trees were torn down as floodwaters swept many cars and trucks into piles of metal and streets were buried under mounds of mud.

Rescue workers reportedly found the vehicle submerged and on its side at the mouth of the torrent in S'Illot at 2am (1am BST) on Wednesday.

The Balearic Islands' emergency services spokeswoman, who wasn't authorized to be named in media reports, told The Associated Press that the body of a Dutch woman was recovered from the garage of a house in Arta, another nearby town.

Spanish tennis icon Rafael Nadal has taken part in a clean-up operation in his native Majorca after the region was hit by deadly flash floods.

"My solidarity and support goes out to the families and friends of victims and all those affected by these tragic floods", said Sanchez.

"It all happened in less than 10 minutes", a witness told Spanish TV. "We had to swim to try to survive". "This looks like the end of the world".

Emergency services in the Balearic archipelago tweeted that the death toll had risen to 10 and a little boy remained missing.

The regional government called an emergency meeting and authorities said rescue workers and military units were heading to the area to help.

Up to 9in (23cm) of rainfall fell on the island in a matter of hours on Tuesday evening.

Earlier on Wednesday, Nadal said on Instagram he was offering to open up his sports centre and tennis academy to people made homeless by the floods.
