Security personnel across Tanzania have been put on high alert in the hunt for the abductors, police said.

Africa's youngest billionaire, Tanzanian tycoon Mohammed Dewji has been kidnapped in Dar es Salaam, the country's capital city.

Although Tanzania has seen a wave attacks and abductions of opposition politicians and perceived government critics, this is the first time a businessman of Mr Dewji's standing has been kidnapped in the country.

Tanzanian billionaire Mohammed Dewji has been kidnapped in early Thursday morning incident which spread like a bush-fire on social media platforms.

Two of the kidnappers were white men, he added.

Authorities are yet to establish the motive for the kidnapping and where they are keeping the businessman.

Dewji's conglomerate, the METL Group, operates in over 35 industries such as trading, agriculture, manufacturing, energy, petroleum, financial services, mobile telephony, infrastructure and real estate, transport, logistics and distribution.

Mr Dewji studied at Georgetown University in Washington DC. He served as an MP from 2005 to 2015.

He is also a shareholder in the famous Simba Club in Dar es Salaam.

They drove into the hotel and opened fire before bundling Dewji into a auto and speeding off, said Dar es Salaam regional police commissioner Lazaro Mambosaso. Another vehicle remained outside. "They then drove quickly from the area and headed towards Masaki", he said.

Dar es Salaam regional commissioner Paul Makonda cautioned the public against speculation.

According to Forbes, Dewji has amassed a fortune of $1.5 billion, making him the youngest billionaire on the African continent.

Three women are among the 55 richest people in Africa, according to Ventures magazine.
