  • Two astronauts make emergency landing after Russian rocket malfunctions during lift-off

Using various media publications, the Russians have accused the Americans of sabotaging one of the Soyuz capsules to get a sick astronaut back to Earth earlier than expected.

Here's the latest on the failed space launch carrying two astronauts (all times local to Kazakhstan).

And it just goes to show that even the most seemingly routine rocket launch is never all that routine.

Hague was originally scheduled to participate in spacewalks in the coming weeks to replace batteries on the outside of the space station.

NASA posted pictures of Hague and Ovchinin undergoing a medical check-up at Dzhezkazgan's airport. The city is about 450 kilometers from the Russia's Baikonur space center, which Russian Federation operates through an agreement with the Republic of Kazakhstan. One of the pictures showed Hague smiling and another had him sitting next to Russia's space agency chief Dmitry Rogozin. Both crew members are reportedly safe and in good condition, and have already been reunited with their families. They were due to return to Earth in December.

The head of Russia's top space medicine center says that two astronauts from the US and Russian Federation are feeling good after an emergency landing.

U.S. astronaut Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Aleksey Ovchinin were rescued without injuries in Kazakhstan.

But wait a second, you may say: doesn't NASA have the Orion crew capsule?

However, in the meantime, this failure has a number of consequences for the agencies and the crew aboard the space station.

Cosmonauts and astronauts are put through gruelling training, including exercises involving weightlessness and centrifugal force that prepare them to control their reactions in real-life scenarios.

Jim Bridenstine, NASA's administrator who was in Kazakhstan to witness Thursday's launch, said in a statement that the failure had been caused by an anomaly with the rocket's booster. Officials said they would suspend manned launches in the light of the new accident. He said Russian Federation will share all relevant information with the U.S.

Staff monitoring the launch said the crew-NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Alexey Ovchinin-returned to earth after launching from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

RIA news agency, citing its own source, reported that Russian Federation had made a decision to suspend all manned space launches following the "Soyuz" failure.

Search and rescue teams were scrambled to the touchdown location as NASA revealed the descent meant the Russian-built Soyuz MS-10 spacecraft had to take "a sharper angle of landing compared to normal".

The pair lifted off as scheduled at 2.40pm local time from the Baikonur cosmodrome on a Soyuz booster rocket.

Russian and US space officials said that the crew is heading for an emergency landing in Kazakhstan at an unspecified time.

Rescue crews are now heading towards the emergency landing site in the barren Kazakh steppe to provide support for the crew.

The Soyuz-FG rocket booster which carries the Soyuz MS-10 capsule is pictured on its way to the International Space Station.

At this moment, there are no Soyuz spacecraft berthed at the orbiting science station.

"Following the test flights, NASA will review the performance data and resolve issues as necessary to certify the systems for operational missions", the USA space agency said last week.

It's been an interesting couple of months for Russia's space program.
