  • Ariana Grande takes to Twitter following Pete Davidson split

Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson have reportedly broken up, according to TMZ.

But sources say that the ex-couple acknowledged "it was simply not the right time for their relationship to take off".

Grande, 25, and Davidson, 24, were confirmed to be dating in May and announced their engagement shortly after.

The first was her slot as the Saturday Night Live performer for the show's season premiere just two weeks ago.

On Saturday, Grande backed out last minute from performing at F-k Cancer's inaugural Barbara Berlanti Heroes fund-raising gala, while manager Scooter Braun said she needs time to heal, seemingly after ex-boyfriend Mac Miller's death. They had been dating a few weeks at the time. When Miller overdosed, Grande faced a mountain of unfair and uneducated backlash from internet warriors who blamed her for his death.

The pair was never shy about sharing affection for one another publicly, especially on social media.

TMZ reported that Grande's engagement ring cost about $100,000.

But after the summer of Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson's epic whirlwind romance, it still was a bit jarring to see the headlines on Sunday evening.

Comedian Trevor Noah stepped in to replace Ariana with a stand-up set.

In a song titled "Pete Davidson" from her most recent album, Grande sang: "Universe must have my back, fell from the sky into my lap/And I know you know that you're my soulmate and all that". According to TMZ, the pair was last spotted together last week.

For those wondering why the news started trending worldwide, this wasn't an ordinary celebrity split.

Both had been expressive of their affection for one another on social media. Follow Yahoo Lifestyle on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
