Fracking has not taken place in the United Kingdom for seven years, but today campaigners lost a legal challenge to block the shale gas company Cuadrilla from fracking the area.

Mr Egan said the process is expected to take around three months to complete before it can test the flow of natural gas from wells and deliver its results in the New Year.

This comes after a legal challenge to stop fracking near Preston in Lancashire failed, giving energy firm Cuadrilla the green light to drill two wells at the site.

Francis Egan, CEO of Cuadrilla, said: "We are delighted to be starting our hydraulic fracturing operations as planned".

Work at Cuadrilla's Preese Hall site near Blackpool was suspended in 2011 after it was linked with two earth tremors.

Shale gas fracking in Lancashire is set to begin tomorrow after a judge in London refused to grant an injunction this afternoon to halt the operation.

Doctors warn of alarming C-section 'epidemic'
That's up from 16 million in 2000, or 12 percent of all births, and significantly higher than the 10-15% considered medically necessary.

But the High Court judge said there was "no evidence" to support the claim and rejected it on the grounds that the council had not failed in its duties regarding civil contingency planning.

The interim injunction was applied for by Bob Dennett, who claimed emergency response planning and procedures at the Preston New Road site were inadequate.

"I am satisfied that the claimant falls at the first hurdle".

Nathalie Lieven QC, for Cuadrilla, told the judge that "every day, it costs Cuadrilla £94,000 to keep all that kit and equipment on site".

"You can have fracking or you can deal with climate change - you can't do both".

The process will be followed by the first flow rate tests from fractured horizontal shale gas wells in Britain to ascertain not only whether the well could commercially produce gas but test how similar the prospect is to the shale plays that have transformed the US gas industry.
