Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman attends a conference in Riyadh, on October 24, 2017.

Riyadh has struck back at the allegations, calling them "lies" and threatening retaliation over any possible economic sanctions by U.S. or other western countries.

On Monday afternoon, another scenario emerged: CNN reported that Saudi Arabia is preparing to say that Khashoggi was killed in an interrogation "that went wrong" and that he was supposed to be abducted instead.

However, he told CBS News on Saturday that the USA was investigating the case which he called "really bad and disgusting" and that "there will be severe punishment".

How was the consulate search conducted?

Khashoggi's disappearance nearly two weeks ago has sparked an global uproar involving the kingdom, Turkey and the United States that remains unresolved.

What does it say about the credibility of an investigation when a cleaning crew fully equipped with boxes of chemicals, mops, trash bags, and. milk arrives at the scene of the alleged crime right before the probe begins?

The New York Times, citing a person familiar with the Saudi plans, reported that Prince Mohamed bin Salman had approved an interrogation or rendition of Khashoggi back to Saudi Arabia. The kingdom has called such allegations "baseless" but has not offered any evidence Khashoggi ever left the consulate. "We're very much working with our allies in the worldwide community to try and bring forward a concerted, or at least an aligned, response as we learn more about this situation", Trudeau said during a "fireside chat" at the Fortune Global Forum in Toronto.

Saudi Arabia's ambitious Vision 2030 project - the brainchild of the kingdom's de facto ruler, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman - is heavily dependent on overseas investment.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, hurriedly sent to Riyadh, expected to get more clarity during talks with Saudi leaders Tuesday.

President Donald Trump is suggesting that "rogue killers" may be responsible for whatever happened to missing Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi. "It sounded to me like maybe these could have been rogue killers".

State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said Mr Trump was sending Mr Pompeo to Riyadh because "determining what happened to Jamal Khashoggi is something of great importance to the President".

The European Union has joined calls for a transparent investigation. Mogherini told reporters in Luxembourg that she will raise the issue at the upcoming EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting.

So far it still remains unclear how Trump would "punish" the kingdom economically over the journalist's disappearance, but major figures in the US Congress, such as Florida Senator Marco Rubio, have suggested halting arms sales to Saudi Arabia.

The Arabic-language daily Okaz wrote a headline on Monday in English warning: "Don't Test Our Patience". It showed a clenched fist made by a crowd of people in the Saudi flag's green color.

However, the White House brushed aside the Saudi threats, pledging a "swift, open, transparent investigation" into the journalist's disappearance. Speaking on CBS' "60 Minutes" Sunday, Trump said that he didn't "want to hurt jobs" at contractors such as Boeing, Lockheed Martin and Raytheon.

Joe Lieberman, a former Democratic senator from CT who became an independent, said the disappearance and suspected murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi are "troubling", but until facts are established, the United States shouldn't destroy its relationship with Saudi Arabia.

The alternative source for the audio recording would have been surveillance devices which Turkish authorities had placed within the Saudi embassy - at the risk of upsetting the country, with whom it maintains a delicate relationship.
