Relax! Mobile numbers issued through Aadhaar KYC wont be disconnected

  • According to reports 50 crore mobile numbers almost half of those in circulation are at the risk of disconnection

There are speculations that subscribers enrolled through Aadhaar-based authentication process may have to provide fresh documents to complete their Know Your Customer (KYC) process again, as a Supreme Court judgment has restricted the use of Aadhaar-based verification by private entities.

It further advised that there is absolutely no reason for panic or fear at all.

Calling such news as "completely untrue and imaginary" the statement said that the Supreme Court in its judgement on the Aadhaar case did not direct anywhere that the mobile number issued through Aadhaar eKYC would be disconnected. Telecom providers will not delete authentication logs already done via Aadhaar eKYC before the Supreme Court judgement that prohibited enrollment through Aadhaar-based authentication for issuing fresh SIM cards, the statement said. "People should not believe in such rumours", it said. "The Court has not also asked to delete all the eKYC data of telecom customers after six months", the DoT statement read. But, the telecom companies or AUAs/KUAs can keep the authentication logs at their end as per Aadhaar regulations to resolve any consumer grievances. "But, in any case her/his mobile no. will not be disconnected", it said.

Earlier, Amit More, founder and CEO of Bengaluru-based peer-to-peer lending solution startup Finzy, had told Inc42 that this decision may have an impact on fintech companies (including P2P lending platforms) such as digital banks, NBFCs, mobile companies and others who rely heavily on Aadhaar-based eKYC verification and eSign for digital signature of documents. "The SIM card will be authenticated through OTP and then issued", a joint statement by the DoT and the UIDAI said on Thursday.

Nearly half of India's phone population belongs to the newest entrant Reliance Jio and they would be more affected since it has been giving SIM cards only through the biometric route.
