  • The Preston New Road fracking site the day before fracking was due to start after a court injunction seeking to halt it was rejected

The protests followed last week's dismissal of a legal big aimed at halting operations proposed by Cuadrilla at its Preston New Road exploration site, where the company is planning to frack two wells.

Protester Ginette Evans said Monday: "The fight's just really started".

"I feel, as somebody in my 50s now, that my generation has so badly let down future generations", she added.

Protestors have gathered outside the hydraulic fracturing site of shale gas explorer Cuadrilla Resources in northern England, where operations have begun after a last minute legal bid was dismissed by a United Kingdom court. "It's such a risky industry and it shouldn't be here".

Cuadrilla, 47.4 percent owned by Australia's AJ Lucas and 45.2 percent owned by a fund managed by Riverstone, said it would spend at least three months fracking two horizontal wells to test flow rates to determine whether full-scale gas extraction would be viable.

He said activists had not been listened to but added: "That just makes you come back even stronger".

A local resident wanted the fracking suspended to allow for a judicial review of the local council's safety procedures, but a High Court judge dismissed the case on Friday.

The company had hoped to start work at the site on Saturday but this was delayed by the effects of Storm Callum. The controversial mining process known as hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, extracts gas from shale rock by injecting fluid at high pressure into shale formations deep beneath the Earth's surface.

Fracking will restart in the United Kingdom today after a High Court challenge was dismissed. Demonstrations "It is morally bankrupt to be heralding the start of a whole new fossil industry, when climate catastrophe awaits".

The government asked its climate advisers on Monday to examine whether Britain should toughen its climate targets and set a date to move to a net zero emissions goal. "You can deal with climate change or you can have fracking - you can't do both".
