  • Trump threatens to use military to close Mexican border as migrant caravan approaches

As the group of some 4,000 people from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras heads toward the USA border with Mexico to seek asylum, Trump has called for stricter border enforcement, threatening to cut foreign aid to the three countries and possibly rip up trade deals.

On Wednesday, the president also threatened to cut USA aid to the Northern Triangle countries - Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador - saying "all payments made to them will STOP (END)!".

Trump threatens to send military to close southern border if migrant caravan continues; panel debates on 'The Story'.

On Thursday, Trump said he prioritizes border security over even the recently struck trade deal to replace NAFTA, the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, or USMCA.

Frustrated by Congress' failure to fully fund his proposed wall, Trump in April ordered National Guard personnel to help secure the border in four southwestern USA states.

The migrants - who say they are traveling in search of jobs, better lives for their families and an escape from gang threats and violent communities - were blocked at the Honduras-Guatemala border for several hours earlier this week by Guatemalan police in riot gear before being allowed to pass.

Vaughan also pointed out that Guatemala has already caved into the caravan, but she is encouraged that Mexico has deployed officers to its southern border.

Trump said migrants in the caravan were being used by his political opponents. The rest would have to apply for refugee status or face deportation.

"Republicans must make the horrendous, weak and outdated immigration laws, and the Border, a part of the Midterms!" he tweeted Wednesday.

"I think it's a good move for President Trump to have made the statements he's made - that our relationship is going to be affected in a bad way", the immigration expert expressed. Trump said in one tweet Thursday.

The issue of immigration is certain to be on the agenda Friday when Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is scheduled to meet with outgoing Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto.

Marcelo Ebrard, Lopez Obrador's pick to become foreign relations secretary after he takes office, said Trump's tweets needed to be understood in the context of the upcoming USA midterm elections.

"We're going to take care of our relationship with the United States government", he said.

Dozens of Arizona National Guard members were among those deployed to the border.

Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales said Wednesday that while Central Americans are legally free to transit from country to country under a regional agreement, a "massive ingress of people without registering" puts Guatemala in a hard position because it's impossible to know who the people are and what may be the intentions of any of their leaders.

"An entire political party is inviting it", Carlson said, adding that when Pelosi told an audience it would be "immoral" to build a wall, it is because she believes "unchecked immigration" will help their political future.

He said he had spoken with Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez about ensuring the migrants who want to return home can do so safely.
