CEO Tim Cook Urges Bloomberg To Retract Spy Chip Story

  • Apple CEO calls on 'Bloomberg' to retract China surveillance report

Earlier on October 4, Bloomberg published an investigation which claimed that nearly 30 companies, including a major bank, government contractors, and the world's most valuable company, Apple Inc. were affected by the hardware-based attack carried out by the Chinese government. The story was a blockbuster that got everyone talking.

Neither side of this story appears to be backing down anytime soon.

Earlier it was reported that Apple has put protection to fix the device outside of its services. Way stronger than is common in these situations. "I don't know what the fuck is going on here". Before long, numerous questions about the veracity of the original report were being raised.

Apple was an important Supermicro customer and had planned to order more than 30,000 of its servers in two years for a new global network of data centers. At the moment there are more questions than answers. Various government and intelligence agencies all claimed they had no evidence to support these claims.

But in an unprecedented step, Mr Cook told Buzzfeed: "They need to do that right thing and retract it". The US Department of Homeland Security said the same thing.

We are deeply disappointed that in their dealings with us, Bloomberg's reporters have not been open to the possibility that they or their sources might be wrong or misinformed. On Thursday evening, an indignant Cook further ratcheted up the tension in response to an inquiry from BuzzFeed News. Amazon, too, shot down Bloomberg's report, with AWS chief information security officer Steve Schmidt asserting, "There are so many inaccuracies in ‎this article as it relates to Amazon that they're hard to count".

Apple's Tim Cook calling for a retraction on a story of this magnitude is pretty insane.

A representative for Bloomberg said the company stands by its story.

However, at this point, Bloomberg has whittled away whatever benefit of the doubt there was left and set fire to the scraps.

Bloomberg continues to stand by its reporting, according to a statement provided to Fortune by a company spokesperson.

Earlier this month, Bloomberg published a controversial report, and now, Apple thinks the publisher should retract the entire story. However, the story itself quickly spiraled out of control, and there was constant pressure from Apple (and Amazon), denying the story outright.

Reporters can, and do, make mistakes.
