According to a report from Reuters, the European Commission has officially approved of the Microsoft and GitHub purchase without any conditions and says the purchase would not damage competition in the sector.

Microsoft first announced plans to buy GitHub back in June, and the response that followed varied from anger to excitement, to questioning what the heck Microsoft (and indeed GitHub) were playing at. Last month, we reported that Microsoft is expected to get a final ruling from European Union on its GitHub acquisition by October 19. It took a look at the chances of Microsoft using GitHub to drive users to Redmond's own development or cloud platforms and observed the simple fact that coders would simply up sticks and move elsewhere, thus devaluing the $7.5bn that Microsoft paid for GitHub.

Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, mentioned the following as the three things we can expect from Microsoft's acquisition of GitHub. The Commission concluded that effective competition in the relevant markets would continue and Microsoft would have no incentive to undermine the open nature of GitHub's platform.

"The market investigation confirmed that Microsoft would not have the market power [to undermine] the open nature of GitHub", The Commission's press release reads. "We will always listen to developer feedback and invest in both fundamentals and new capabilities".
