The recently released Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report, which was largely a re-packaging of existing science, says, "Numerous studies towards and beyond AR5 (5th Assessment Report) have reported a decreasing trend in the global number of tropical cyclones and/or the globally accumulated cyclonic energy". But every small thing we do can make a difference. With the IPCC report providing the scientific proof of ever-worsening climate change, it is time to rely on us for guidance as we are well-placed to explain in deeply human terms the climate crisis at our doorstep.
According to the report, temperatures will reach 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels between 2030 and 2052, and 1°C of it is a direct result of human activities.
"Sea level rise will continue beyond 2100 even if global warming is limited to 1.5 degrees C in the 21st century", the report states, because of Antarctic ice sheet instability and/or irreversible loss of the Greenland ice sheet that could mean sea level rise "over hundreds to thousands of years".
The damage caused by climate change could cost $54 trillion in just the next few years. On what basis they make this claim is a mystery, but the point stands: the majority of this sample of Americans do not think humans have anything to do with climate change, or that the climate is not changing at all.
Avoiding the suffering that a plus-two degrees Celsius world would bring, the report says, requires such a thorough transformation of the world's economy, agriculture and culture that "there is no documented historical precedent".
If nothing gets done about global warming and climate change, America will suffer alongside the world. "We're going to change that". It betrayed the conclusion by most climate scientists that warming waters are connected to the strong storms.

They are called "feedbacks" because they are self-reinforcing processes that are unleashed by the warming we have already caused, and which we can not shut off even if we end all of our own emissions. This year, it has been hit by a combination of earthquakes, typhoons, landslides, floods and heat waves! This is the best-case scenario.
"But I don't know that it's man-made", Trump said in an interview aired last Sunday. In northern Africa, droughts would last five years.
Worse, the report shows that the Nationally Determined Contributions set voluntarily by signatories to the Paris accord are vastly insufficient. (We are now at +1C) But it still shies away from talking about the feedbacks, the refugees, and mass death. Catherine Cortez Masto, D-Nev., has spoken about the urgency of dealing with climate change while Sen.
So why is it that we seem to care so little?
Global net emissions of carbon dioxide must be cut by 45 percent by 2030 and be "net zero" - emissions offset by carbon capture and storage, or absorption by billions of trees planted for that goal, for example - by 2050 in order to limit warming to 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit, the report says. Its land and sea temperatures have been increasing.
"We need to actually engage more Indigenous communities and First Nations (so) they can export that energy to other places, sell to larger communities outside and have a revenue-generating renewable energy". Regularly scheduled blackouts would also be a good idea. Now it is a way for likeminded political views to preach to people who need not be preached to. It's time to decide - and to hold all politicians to account. (More on this in a future column).
Meanwhile, our elected "leaders" are imitations of Nero, fiddling while the city of Rome burns. And that is before Pres. Donald Trump pulls the USA out of the agreement.
