  • USC reaches $240 million proposed settlement with victims of gynecologist

John Manly, an Irvine-based attorney who represents 180 of Tyndall's former patients, told the Los Angeles Times that the settlement was premature and did not fully absolve USC's handing of the allegations against the doctor.

Tyndall was was dismissed in 2017 for inappropriate behavior, according to USC. Almost 500 women have sued USC claiming mistreatment by the gynecologist, Dr. George Tyndall.

Thousands of women who were patients of Tyndall during his three decades at USC will be eligible for $2,500 payments, whether or not they have alleged abuse.

Three attorneys representing almost 300 accusers said they're strongly advising their clients against joining the federal action so they can fight in state court.

The agreement in principle would pay a minimum of $2,500 and up to $250,000 to former patients, for a total of $215 million.

"Following the expected court approval, all class members will be sent a notice of their options under the settlement in the coming months", Austin said.

It was structured with different tiers to give flexibility to the women, Lee said.

"Patients who are willing to provide further details about their experience could be eligible for additional compensation up to $250,000", Austin's statement reads.

"We are continuing to vigorously litigate our state cases for numerous victims and we will insist that each of our clients be properly compensated for what they were forced to endure", attorney Gloria Allred told the wire service.

The firm on Thursday announced the filing of 93 more lawsuits accusing the university of ignoring complaints about the now-former campus doctor for years.

More than 400 women have since accused Tyndall of sexual abuse, some in a federal lawsuit covered by the settlement and others in state lawsuits that are still pending.

The University of Southern California said Friday that it had reached a tentative agreement to pay $215 million in compensation to victims who alleged they were sexually harassed or abused by a campus gynecologist. "We were trapped in a system that robbed us of our safety, our dignity, and even our voices - in the very place that should have been teaching us to stand and speak our truth". But there was no follow-up, she said. Many sweeping changes have been made and we continue to work every day to prevent all forms of misconduct on our campuses, to provide outstanding care to all students, and to ensure we have policies and procedures that prioritize respect for our students and our entire university community.

Last July, one of his lawyers, Leonard Levine, said the examinations were for medical purposes and "consistent with the standard of care for such examinations". Two longtime student health clinic administrators were also fired.

"We really feel this is the first step toward healing and moving forward", she said.

The USC Board of Trustees is completing an independent investigation into the USC student health center, according to a statement released Friday by Rick Caruso, chair of the USC board of trustees.

Frederick J. Ryan Jr., publisher and chief executive of The Washington Post, is a member of the USC board.

The Los Angeles police and the Los Angeles County district attorney's office are both reviewing allegations against Tyndall, according to NBC news.

The settlement won't be paid with tuition or donor dollars, Austin said, but from reserves "and discussions with insurers". Still, it is unlikely to end the school's legal battles over the issue.

In court documents and in interviews, former patients of Tyndall's have accused him of a variety of abusive practices, including invasive and unnecessary pelvic exams, touching their vaginas, asking them to undress in front of him and making sexually explicit remarks about women's bodies.

Pennsylvania State University has paid more than $100 million to settle claims by people who accused assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky of sexual abuse.
