Not exercising can be worse for you than smoking

  • High intensity workouts can help you live to 100

"With every increment of time spent on the treadmill during the exercise stress test, there is a benefit as far as mortality", said study co-author Wael Jaber, M.D., likening exercise to medication.

'We can see from the study that the ultra-fit still have lower mortality, ' Jaber said, indicting that there is no amount of exercising that could result in health risks. He said researchers must now convey the risks to the general population that "being unfit should be considered as strong of a risk factor as hypertension, diabetes and smoking - if not stronger than all of them".

When the subgroups were analysed by age, the survival benefit of elite versus high performance was the most notable in older patients, the findings revealed.

"There is no level of exercise or fitness that exposes you to risk", he said.

"Cardiovascular disease and diabetes are the most expensive diseases in the United States".

Kasatkina Beats Jabeur to Win Kremlin Cup
Kasatkina embraced her coach and said she had realised a dream by becoming the sixth Russian to win the event on home soil. The exhausted Jabeur served the last game with severe cramp and tears in her eyes.

As such, Jaber said, "There actually is no ceiling for the benefit of exercise" - including in the case of "ultra" exercisers, who are sometimes said to be at higher risk of death due to the extremes they push their bodies. The researchers looked at the possibility of diehard gym rats and marathoners being at risk from pushing themselves too hard, but found that there's no link between an abundance of exercise and an early grave.

There is no argument that exercise is good for you, but exactly what benefits-and how much benefit-you receive are somewhat up for debate.

Those that exercised minimally still had a 390 per cent higher risk associated with death compared to those that regularly exercised. "But I'm surprised they overwhelm even the risk factors as strong as smoking, diabetes or even end-stage disease". The risk of dying was twice as much among those who fared poorly on the treadmill compared to those who had kidney failure on dialysis.

Comparing those with a sedentary lifestyle to the top exercise performers, he said, the risk associated with death is "500 percent higher".

Cardiorespiratory fitness is the ability of the circulatory and respiratory systems to supply oxygen to skeletal muscles during sustained physical activity. For those patients with hypertension, the elite performers again showed a almost 30 percent reduction in all-cause mortality compared to high performers. Women seemed to benefit more in terms of health when they included exercise in their routines. "We're meant to walk, run, exercise".
