CITY-Hurricane Willa strengthened into a Category 5 storm with sustained winds up to 160 miles per hour Monday as it headed toward Mexico's western coast, where it is expected to make landfall as a major hurricane Tuesday.
The NHC said it could make landfall along Mexico's southwestern coast Tuesday night or Wednesday morning and bring with it a life-threatening storm surge - especially near and to the south of where the center of Willa makes landfall.
Hurricane Willa has quickly strengthened into a deadly Category 4 storm and will intensify further this week in wake of low wind shear and warm water temperatures.
It was about 280 miles (450 kilometers) south-southwest of the port city of Manzanillo on Saturday afternoon with maximum sustained winds of 60 mph (95 kph).
The southwestern Mexican coast is warned to brace for risky storm surges which will impact on Tuesday.
A hurricane warning has also been issued for Mexico's western coast between San Blas and Mazatlan.
NHC forecasters expect additional strengthening into Monday and say Willa is expected to make landfall over the southwestern coast sometime late Tuesday or Wednesday.
Tropical storm warnings ranged from Playa Perula north to San Blas and from Mazatlan north to Bahia Tempehuaya.
Heavy rainfall will also cause risky conditions, as six to twelve inches are forecast to fall.
A map made by the National Hurricane Center shows the projected path for Hurricane Willa as of 8 a.m. ET on October 22, 2018.
Hurricane-force winds extended 30 miles (45 kilometers) from the storm's center, and tropical storm-force winds were up to 105 miles (1650 kilometers) out.
The storm is expected to weaken when it makes landfall Tuesday but is forecast to bring large waves, risky storm surge, gusty winds and heavy rain. It would also cause torrential downpours of about 70 to 150 mm of rain in parts of Southern Mexico with over 250 mm over pockets of Guerrero, Michoaca, Colima and Jalisco causing flash flooding and landslides.
