Fey paid tribute to Louis-Dreyfus at the award ceremony by tracking the similarities between their lives.

"Julia let Elaine be selfish and petty and sarcastic and a awful, bad dancer", Fey said. "Julia was letting us know that she was the real deal, comedy-wise, and she didn't need to give us midriff for (us) to watch her work because, here's the secret, Julia's not afraid to be unlikable - not onscreen and not in person".

He made his comments as he walked on the red carpet, as he headed into the ceremony to honoring Louis-Dreyfus as the 21st recipient of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.

"So many greats of American comedy have been honored over the years, and so far only one prize rescinded", Colbert said, referring to Cosby, whose 2009 award was rescinded after his conviction on sexual-assault charges.

During last year's ceremony to honor David Letterman, Cosby's name was never mentioned. Behind Colbert, a sign read, "It has been 167 days since last Un-Twaining". Members of Louis-Dreyfus' own family were event called out, with her teasing, "According to Wikipedia, I have two sons, Charlie and Henry".

Those scheduled to speak at the ceremony include Jerry Seinfeld, Stephen Colbert and previous Mark Twain recipient Tina Fey.

As celebrity guests arrived for the ceremony, Seinfeld recalled the first time he saw Louis-Dreyfus in action - and knew nearly immediately she was a major talent.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus is one of the best-known comedic actresses of her generation, and now she's being recognized with the Mark Twain Award for lifetime achievement in comedy.

The 57-year-old Louis-Dreyfus emerged from Chicago's famed Second City comedy troupe before joining the cast of "Saturday Night Live".

Louis-Dreyfus has earned the most professional renown with Veep but the actress became a national celebrity two decades earlier as Elaine on Seinfeld - a show that was a cultural touchstone during a nine-year run that ended in 1998. She won her first lead comedy actor Emmy for the sitcom the The New Adventures of Old Christine then six more for her role as Vice-President Selina Meyer on Veep.

"What a scam." The seventh and final season of Veep was delayed while Louis-Dreyfus received treatment for breast cancer, but is now currently in production. That season is now in production.

Per The Hill, the speech is set to be aired by PBS on November 19.
