NASA scientists captured the image on an IceBridge flight, an airborne survey of polar ice.
The rectangular mile-wide block of ice was seen off the east coast of the Antarctic Peninsula near to the Larsen C ice shelf.
The operation will give a 3D view of the ice at either end of the planet so that they can monitor how much it changes over time.
UMBC JCET Scientist at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Christopher Shuman, who has been watching the Larsen C Ice Shelf explained that the main iceberg (which was the size of about the size of the state of DE when it split from the shelf in July) has had a previous series of collisions, resulting in larger and smaller fragments.
The unusual mass, known as an angular iceberg, was spotted during a flyover of the east coast of the Antarctic Peninsula.
The US space agency said the object's sharp angles and flat surface suggested it had recently broken away from an ice shelf.
These particular icebergs can be truly enormous, measuring hundreds and occasionally thousands of square kilometers across, such as the 11,000 square kilometer (4,200 square mile) B-15, the world's largest free-floating object ever recorded.
The main berg, dubbed the A68 Iceberg, collided with the Bawden Ice Rise near the edge of the Larsen C Ice Shelf in May this year, causing numerous fractures.
