  • Britain's Brexit Secretaty Dominic Raab has queried the Saudi's account of how journalist Jamal Khashoggi died

Soon after talking with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman over phone, Trump in a tweet said that answers related to Khashoggi's disappearance would be forthcoming shortly.

In a sign of growing pressure on Saudi Arabia, Turkey said it will announce details of its investigation into the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi on Tuesday and United States congressional leaders said the Gulf kingdom in particular its crown prince should face severe consequences for the death of the writer in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. Saud al-Qahtani, an adviser to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, created the strategy behind the effort, the newspaper said, citing US and Saudi officials.

The Saudi version lacked "consistency and credibility", said Chrystia Freeland, Canada's foreign minister.

British Foreign Minister Jeremy Hunt said on Friday allegations regarding Mr Khashoggi would be totally unacceptable if true but any response by Britain would be "considered". For weeks, Saudi Arabia had denied any knowledge of his whereabouts and insisted that he had walked out of the consulate unharmed.

Trump initially said he believed the Saudi account, but on Saturday he said he still does not know where Khashoggi's body is. President Trump appeared to initially accept the Saudi explanation, but US lawmakers, intelligence officials and foreign policy experts quickly accused the government in Riyadh of a coverup.

The statement by British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt and his French and German counterparts Jean-Yves Le Drian and Heiko Maas, respectively said the "violent death" of Khashoggi, within the premises of the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul "had been feared" for many days but its confirmation still comes as a "shock".

"It's not possible for the Saudi administration to wiggle itself out of this crime if it's confirmed", Kurtulmus said on Saturday.

Before the Saudi announcements, Trump said he might consider sanctions, although he has also appeared unwilling to distance himself too much from the Saudis, citing Riyadh's role in countering Iranian influence in the Middle East and lucrative potential arms deals.

Another Turkish ruling party official, Leyla Sahin Usta, also criticized Saudi Arabia, saying the kingdom should have given its explanation "before the situation reached this point".

Campaigning for her party in a regional election, Merkel repeated to a news conference her earlier condemnation of Khashoggi's killing, which Saudi Arabia admitted had taken place inside its consulate in Istanbul.
