Russian Space Agency Releases Video of Failed Soyuz Launch

  • A Soyuz rocket under construction in Jan. 2018. The four strapped-on boosters are at bottom

This caused the mission to be aborted and all Soyuz missions grounded. The next mission to the space station, MS-11, will carry Russian Oleg Kononenko, American Anne McClain, and Canadian David Saint-Jacques. Hague and Ovchinin where rescued by response teams in Kazakhstan after their capsule ejected from the booster in what is called a ballistic landing, but the subsequent grounding of the Soyuz booster placed the very future of the ISS in jeopardy. This is all part of the larger effort to ensure that Russian Federation and its Soyuz rockets continue to be the go-to for manned flights to the International Space Station, at least until the United States gets its own manned flight platforms up and running. It's a miracle that neither of the astronauts was injured.

Because of that bent pin on the sensor, the boosters in Block D ended up colliding with the "core stage" of the rocket during their separation, resulting in a loss of attitude control, which the rocket's ability to stay pointed into the correct direction.

Because of the faulty sensor, the lid of a nozzle on one of the side boosters did not open, thereby preventing the boosters from falling away cleanly. Video from an on-board camera shows it happening as the four strap-on boosters detach from the core stage at 1:23. In addition to the Progress cargo shipment, Japan's robotic HTV-7 resupply ship is due to be set loose for disposal on November 7, and Northrop Grumman is scheduled to launch a Cygnus cargo carrier on November 15.

Dmitry Rogozin, the Space Agency Chief of Russian Federation stated that since the mishap occurred in 11 October, this is the first rocket launched from the family of Soyuz from the launch pad. Boeing and SpaceX are now working on Soyuz alternatives, but their spacecraft will not be ready for test flights until 2019.

Currently, there are three astronauts on board the ISS, with enough food, water and other supplies to last for several months. These astronauts will return to earth around 20th December.
