  • A number of races are so close that it may not be possible to declare a winner on election night leaving control of the House and Senate up in the air

Trump has framed the elections as a choice between law and order maintained by Republicans and an out-of-control Democratic mob, while focusing heavily on hardline immigration campaign promises, including a legally dubious pledge to end birthright citizenship for the children of undocumented immigrants born in the US.

They are vying for the seat being vacated by Republican Sen. Joe Donnelly in IN and Republican Marsha Blackburn's win in Tennessee made it much more hard for Democrats to make inroads.

There was some consolation for Democrats as Senators Joe Manchin and Bob Menendez held on to their seats after tough campaigns in West Virginia and New Jersey respectively.

But in some other toss-up races, the GOP managed to hold on.

WASHINGTON-The U.S. midterm elections brought a surge of female candidates to ballots across the country. Trump won Texas with more than 52% of the vote in 2016. Only a handful of seats are viewed as potential pickup opportunities for Democrats, with the party hoping to flip seats in closely-watched races in states such as Arizona and Nevada, as well as longer shot attempts in Tennessee and Texas. Cynthia Nixon challenged Democratic incumbent Andrew Cuomo for NY governor. But now the Democrats are harnessing military patriotism too.

Americans are voting for all 435 seats in the House and 35 out of 100 seats in the Senate, a as well as state governors.

The 2018 USA midterm election has already set records for early voting, and turnout appears to be up across the board.

Trump was watching the results roll in from the White House, where he spent the day holed up with friends and family. The President has energised a staggering number of Americans at packed arenas and in overflow crowds at rallies across the country. With the first polls not slated to close until 6 P.M. eastern, polling was the only indicators both parties had on Tuesday of their prospects.
