  • Durian known as the world's worst-smelling fruit

About 2 tons of the world's stinkiest fruit was in the cargo hold of the Jakarta-bound Sriwijaya Air flight at Bengkulu in Sumatra, the BBC reported.

Passengers on an Indonesian airplane almost came to fisticuffs with the flight crew on Monday because they could smell the stench of two tons durian in the cargo area.

"The three tonnes [mentioned in the video] is the total weight of baggages and other cargo, and this includes the durian".

Passengers on the flight demanded the fruit be unloaded before the plane took off due to the terrible stench.

"We made the necessary precautions, such as putting in pandan leaves and coffee powder to absorb the durian smell", Rahim said. The problem is, videos circulating where a passenger taking the video accused carrying durian as a safety hazard.

The report described an improper checklist procedure that failed to indicate the retracted flaps and slats of the plane and lead to the unsuccessful take-off that took the lives of passengers, crew as well as people on the ground.

Durian is a large, spikey fruit enjoyed across Asia, but many despise the foul-smelling delicacy. "I complained to the stewardess but they told me to just fill up a complaint form", said Amir Zidane in a Facebook post.

The flight, which was scheduled to take off at 10.40am was subsequently delayed by an hour while the fruit was removed.

Following the incident, Sriwajiya Air said the airline was within its rights to carry the fruit in cargo.

The airline nonetheless justified its decision to transport the fruit saying: "It's not illegal to carry durian in a flight as long as it is wrapped properly in accordance with flight regulations-carried inside the hold", senior corporate communications manager Retri Maya said in a statement on Tuesday.

"Many airlines do this", it told the Jakarta Post.

The head of Bengkulu airport, Anies Wardhana told local news outlet Detik the airport would "evaluate" future packing situations so that they would "not cause passenger discomfort".
