Three bodies have been found in a broken-down auto and 12-year-old boy is missing in Australia.

At a press conference on Thursday morning, Investigators revealed that a major land and air search is now underway for another child who they believe may have also been in the auto.

Police said the child's body was located 120 metres away from a family of three who were found dead yesterday near an abandoned auto on the outskirts of the community of Willowra, 300 kilometres north-west of Alice Springs.

"Police can confirm, the body of the child was located 120 metres from the family found dead on Jarra Jarra Road yesterday", NT Police said in a statement.

Earlier, police confirmed a man and woman, both aged 19, and a three-year-old boy were found dead about 4.5 kilometres from their broken down vehicle.

Northern Territory Police had been conducting a land and air search of the area after other family members told them the older boy might have been a passenger.

Authorities were alerted to the incident after a man raised the alarm at the Willowra Health Clinic just before 12.30pm on Wednesday.

Their vehicle was about 70km from Willowra and was last seen leaving the township on Friday bound for Yarra Yarra.

The three bodies discovered on Wednesday were those of a young family, but police have not said if the 12-year-old boy, who was the subject of land and air searches, was also related.

"The whereabouts of this 12-year-old boy are not known at this point in time", Duty Superintendent Shaun Gill told ABC radio on Thursday.

Family members have not authorised the release of the boy's name but say people living in the surrounding communities of Ali Curung, Ti Tree and Willowra are aware of his identity.

"(Police) identified that it wasn't a fatal motor vehicle accident as reported. "He is quite distraught about what he has found", said Supt Jody Nobbs.
