Nationals’ rejected offer to Bryce Harper was a record-setting $300M

  • Report: Harper Turned Down $300 Million Extension with Nats, Asking Price Expected to Start at $400 Million

Harper headlines one of the most valuable free-agent classes in Major League Baseball history, which also includes infielder Manny Machado, closer Craig Kimbrel and former Cy Young Award victor Dallas Keuchel. As the hot stove season begins, the 66-year-old founder, owner and president of the Boras Corporation of Newport Beach, California, stands ready as always to stoke a raging fire and rake in gobs of cash for a stable of high-profile free-agent clients.

According to multiple people familiar with the negotiations, the Nationals discussed terms for a new deal with Harper and his agent, Scott Boras, throughout September.

USA Today reported that Harper rejected a 10-year, $300 million deal from Washington.

An incredible amount to turn down - as it would be the biggest free-agent deal in terms of total money in the history of the four major sport - but also almost $100 million short of what Harper and agent Scott Boras are seeking. 2018 was a bit of a down year for Harper.

North Dakota voters set to reject marijuana legalization measure
He's not alone in thinking more needs to be done to address people who are locked up for non-violent marijuana-related offenses. A similar measure was defeated in North Dakota, meaning there are now 10 states that allow recreational use of pot.

After seven seasons with the Washington Nationals, it looks as though Harper's time in D.C. could come to an end - though all options are still on the table. They can not wait for Harper to make his decision - which many in the industry believe will come no sooner than the Winter Meetings in Las Vegas next month - and miss out on the market.

"I'm comfortable with the alternative (to signing Harper)", Rizzo said Tuesday.

Whether the Nationals will be without Harper remains to be seen. The Nationals made him a qualifying offer last Friday. Max Scherzer got exactly $30 million. But no position player has ever earned an average annual value of more than $US27.5 million (Alex Rodriguez and Yoenis Cespedes).
